Instructors/Skippers

Al LAl Lubkowski, Sail Instructor and Operaator, Blackfish Sailing Adventuresubkowski, the boat owner and Operator of Blackfish Sailing adventures (sailing school) will be your principal Skipper, and will be teaching both the "Introduction to Sail" and the Basic Cruising Standard.

Al is a Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) Sailing Instructor. Marine courses to his credit include CYA Basic Cruising, Intermediate Cruising and CYA Coastal Navigation Standard. Other courses include: Radio Operator Certificate, Emergency Duties A2, Marine First Aid. Al is also a diver (NAUI).

Sea time – Al’s experience sailing is extensive and spans over 35 years: having “blue water” sailed on both east and west coasts of North America, the Bahamas, and along the coasts of Belize and Australia both as skipper on his own boat and as crew. Since 1991, Al in his role as a marine Eco-Tour Operator with his company, Blackfish Wilderness Expeditions, has explored many of the waters around Victoria and north-east coast of Vancouver Island (in tour vessels comprising a giant 47 foot Canoe, kayaks and his two sail boats). His experience as a naturalist and story teller in his many years guiding tours along the BC coast will be an added asset to your sail boat adventures with Al.

The sailing programs and charters Al Lubkowski is offering are simply an opportunity for Al to combine his passion for teaching, with his life-long love for adventure and exploration.

Back Up Resources:

Dave Deeks: Dave is a certified CYA Instructor for both Basic and Instructor, Dave DeekIntermediate Cruising. Qualifications Include CYA Advanced Cruising Standard, St. John’s Ambulance first aid and NAUI (diving).

Sea time: From his antics, Dave would appear to be an incorrigible romantic, having spent many years on the sea, with his family sailing his Houghs 38 on the "Coconut Milk Run" through U.S.A., Mexico, French Polynesia, and Hawaii. While Dave may not admit to it, he has also been labeled a “social animal”. Dave has the reputation for livening up any event, even a shipwreck and a wake! He is at his best playing boisterous Irish songs on "Jenny", his 12-string guitar, or his miniature banjo, "Rosie".  With a little coaxing, Dave will even add a little harmonica playin', foot tappin' tambourine and story telling to fit the occasion. No dull moments with Dave aboard. He also prides himself with fine cooking - and of course, fine eating.

Deep down, Dave Deeks shares the desire of all our instructors - which is to help students learn to sail well and to sail safely – so that they too, can follow their blue water dreams....

Bruce Stott: Bruce is certified as a Canadian Yachting Association Learn to Cruise Instructor-Evaluator. He has been teaching sailing and power boating courses for over 35 years to both students and instructors.  Having taken his courses I can attest not only to Bruce’s considerable knowledge of his subject but his unbridled love and enthusiasm for teaching to a high standard - even after all these years! I have yet to find a student or seasoned sailor stump Bruce on any question of seamanship.

Sea time - Since 1980 Bruce has spent in excess of 800 days on boats. Much of this time has been spent on live-aboard cruises in the Gulf Islands and Strait of Georgia. He has also sailed such challenging waters as San Francisco Bay, Lake Ontario and oceans off Hawaii. There are very few boats Bruce has not sailed or motored. We are most glad to have Bruce on-board to assist with both sail and power training.
