
Basic Crew or Day Skipper

Learn what it takes to be crew and/or skipper aboard a sloop-rigged sailboat. We will be sailing in moderate sea conditions and in familiar waters, probably off Oak Bay and Victoria Harbour. In completing this course, the holder is certified as being competent to either Crew or Skipper (depending on your preference and our assessment) aboard a sailing vessel of under 10 metres , where no navigational hazards exist, and in moderate wind and sea conditions within 5 miles of safe harbour.
Afloat knowledge and Skills will include boating terminology, safety and emergency procedures, knots, basic maintenance, sail handling, docking, anchoring, points of sail, reefing, passage planning, basic navigational skills, man overboard procedures, tides and currents, manoevering under power, Collision Regulations weather, and much more. This course will be taught according to Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) standards.
The Canada Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator’s Certificate (PCOC). will also be awarded upon completion of this course. Prerequisite: none
We offer two options for achieving the Basic Crew or Day Skipper Standard:

1) 5 Day Liveaboard Study Option. This option combines “home” study and on-board tutoring with sailing. It consists of five days live-aboard sailing the Gulf Islands in our 35 foot Beneteau sloop. We depart on a Sunday at 1600 and finish the following Friday at 1600 hours. Our season is March through October. Dates TBA.
Course Fees : $1250. + GST per person. Four nights accommodation, bedding and towels, 8 hearty and healthy meals are included while on-board (5 breakfasts beginning Monday morning , 5 lunches & 5 dinners (the first one being Sunday eve.). Also included are all learning materials including home-study book, log book, CYA certification fees and Pleasure Craft Operator's Card study material, instruction and exam (leading to the PCOP card)

2) Victoria - "Weekend Based Option” This option consists of home study, followed by an evening session reviewing our home work, and completing the Ashore Exam. The Afloat Sessions will be conducted on two consecutive weekends from 0900 to 1700 hours, from our Victoria base (sailing either off Oak Bay or Victoria Harbour, depending on conditions) in our Beneteau 351.
Course Fees : $800. + GST per person. Includes home-study book, log book, CYA certification fees and Pleasure Craft Operator's Card study material, instruction and exam (leading to the PCOP card). Participants will be expected to bring their own lunches.
